ASI Personnel

The Institute taps the talents of many individuals and organizations in order to provide the best program possible. Personnel are volunteers, college officials, academic faculty, students and Adventuresports career professionals. Individuals represent local and state government, regional industry, land management agencies and field practioners. Our Colloquium speakers offer a wealth of knowledge and experience to our students to better strengthen them in setting their own mission and goals for themselves and the community. Together we strive to serve our students and the growing Adventuresport industry of the region.

Fly Fishing Guide Certification

At the request of Maryland DNR this board was developed to devise and administer an education and certification program for fly fishing guides. The committee meets on an annual basis to review the certification requirements and upcoming issues in fly fishing and permitting.

November 17, 2009 Kent Ford Paddle Sports Career The Call of the River Produced a whitewater paddling historical documentary featuring vintage canoe and kayak footage, eclectic pioneers, and untold stories. 30 years of paddling instruction, 2-time World Champion Slalom Racer, Coach-US Kayak Team, 5-time Olympic Whitewater announcers, produced and authored over 20 videos and books.

October 20, 2009 Scott Richardson Transition Age Youth Program Coordinator Therapeutic Recreation with Young Adults Provided insight on how therapeutic recreation works and the tie in to the adventure sports field and our own programming at Garrett. He provided information regarding tracking the progress of the participant and relayed the positive results that this type of programming brings.

Paul Brown Religious & political philosophies of the Afghan people Body Guard in Afghanistan

Paul was a medic in the military, a 25 year retired trooper with the Maryland State Police, and a hired civilian body guard for an Afghanistan military commander. Paul had just returned from a 1-year period in Afghanistan and provided information about the religious/political philosophies of the Afgan people.

The Hopkins 4k for Cancer

A Journey for Hope-in the summer of 2008

The 25 team members biked for the Hopkins 4k for Cancer, a student ran, non-profit organization that has a three-part mission of raising funds, spreading awareness, and fostering hope, all in the fight against cancer. They create awareness by biking 9 weeks and 4,000 miles across the United States, from Baltimore, Maryland to San Francisco, California. (Note: ASI assisted in the providing funds for her journey)

November 2008 Sara Bell Owner/Operator of Green River Adventures How the Business Trade Worked for Her

Owner of a whitewater kayaking school and river guide business in Saluda, NC. Graduate of Brevard College in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education & instructs WW kayaking classes there now. Leads multi-day wilderness trips for American teenagers in Costa Rica, started an outdoor program for troubled teens in Vermont at the Bennington School, managed operations for Pisgah Whitewater before turning that business into Green River Adventures. Serves on the board of directors for ECO (Environmental Conservation Organization) for Western North Carolina.

Ascended cliffs all across the United States and Europe. Driven by his passion for adventure and challenge, he has established over 400 first ascents, primarily in the Eastern US. An avid writer on climbing topics and accomplished educator.

December 2007 Dr. Charles Werntz, P.O., MPH, FACOEM Search and Rescue Mountaineer Area Rescue Group, Inc. Dr. Werntz, was one of the leaders during a search and rescue for an autistic boy at Dolly Sods which Garrett College took part in.
