Rock Climbing Resources:

Local bouldering and some small top rope sites are available within 10-20 minutes of the Garrett campus but for “real climbing” you have to travel a little. Fortunately within 3 hours of campus we have 2 of the premiere climbing areas of the east coast, Cooper’s Rocks, Fork Run, Seneca Rocks, New River Gorge and Nelson’s Rocks. Below are some resources climbers might find useful for researching climbing areas and building their equipment inventory. Our program uses Cooper’s, Seneca, Fork Run and, on occasion, Nelson’s Rocks for their classes.  Climb safely.

Climbing Site Information:

Fork Run

Located within 15 minutes from Garrett College, Fork Run offers a selection of single pitch (lead and top rope) routes along with bouldering options. To inquire about guided climbing trips, contact the Adventuresports Institute of Garrett College.

Cooper’s Rock State Forest

Known as a world class bouldering venue, Coopers Rock is a popular top rope and bouldering site with a variety of hiking and biking trails. For more information, check it out at http://www.coopersrockstateforest.com

Seneca Rocks

Multi-pitch traditional climbing area located 2 hours south of Garrett College in the Monongahela National forest.  https://www.senecarocks.com/

Nelson Rocks
Home of the Via Ferrata and lots of sport routes (many set by our former students and Seneca Rock Mt. Guides), entrance fee. Located 2.5 hours south near Franklin, WV.

New River Gorge

Located less than 3 hours from Garrett College, the gorge offers many multi-pitch areas spread out over 30 miles of canyon protected in a national park. Summersville Lake 20 miles before reaching the NR Gorge offers many sport routes some of which require belaying from a boat. Both are a conservative 4 hours south of Garrett via I-79S and US 19 near Fayetteville, WV.
